چکیده
This review talk discusses some issues of active research in perturbative QCD. Among the topics discussed are, heavy flavor and prompt photon production in hadron-hadron collisions, “small x” phenomena and the current status of αs. Invited talk presented at the 1994 Meeting of The Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society, Albuquerque NM, August 1-6, 1994 This work was supported by the Director, Office of Energy Research, Office of High Energy and Nuclear Physics, Division of High Energy Physics of the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract DE-AC03-76SF00098.

We describe how thermalization occurs in heavy ion collisions in the framework of perturbative QCD. When the saturation scale Q s is large compared to Λ QCD , thermalization takes place during a time of order α −13/5 Q −1 s and the maximal temperature achieved is α 2/5 Q s .

The principles of minimal sensitivity (PMS) criterion is applied to the perturbative free energy density, or pressure, of hot QCD, which include the ∼ g s ln gs and part of the ∼ g 6 s terms. Applications are made separately to the shortand long-distance parts of the pressure. Comparison with the lattice results, at low temperatures, shows that the resultant “optimal” approximants are substanti...

Using a combination of S-Matrix and perturbative QCD properties in the small x Bj regime, we propose a formulation of hard diffraction unifying the partonic (Ingelman-Schlein) Pomeron, Soft Colour Interaction and QCD dipole descriptions.

We discuss the interaction between perturbations in the inflaton and the background during the preheating phase in simple inflationary models. By numerically solving the Einstein field equations we are able to assess the impact of non-linear gravitational effects on preheating, and to assess the accuracy of perturbative discussions of the preheating epoch.

Measurements of single transverse spin asymmetries in high energy inclusive processes have always shown unexpected and challenging results. Several cases are considered and discussed within a QCD approach which couples perturbative dynamics to new non perturbative partonic information; the aim is that of developing a consistent phenomenological description of these unusual single spin phenomena...
